98 Melbourne Hakkinen was already leading comfortably and taking the victory, pit stops done, when he misheard a radio call, and went to the pits. The pit was empty, of course, because there was no stops scheduled any more, and he drove trough the pits, without a stop, and lost the lead. So the win was already going deservedly for Mika before the empty pit mistake.

The reasoning was, that Villeneuve already had damage to his car in the side from Schumi's crash in to him earlier in the race. The WC was far more valuable than a single victory, so there was every reason to let faster cars by without a fight, and not risk a crash with them and losing the WC. The exact "agreement" was, that IF Mac's are close and faster, Villeneuve won't fight to the death for the race win.

DC had won races earlier that season. Mika had no victories in his career at that point. Mika had lost maybe two victories in that season because of team blundering a pit stop and a mechanical failure in the other while he was leading a race. DC and Mika were not fighting for championship, so they thought that they want to boost Mika's confidence and pay back their pit stop mistake earlier that season. Debatable situation of course.

Hmm.. was Keke in german TV? Actually in this finnish national tv clip the other commentator in '97 Jerez was not Keke, he was Erkki Mustakari. Keke was in the booth in finnish tv with Matti Kyllönen several times, if I remember right, in every Monaco race, once in Nurburgring/Sepang and both times in Suzuka when Mika won WDC's. So it was the first WDC from finnish driver since Keke, and then Keke was in the booth when the second one came :)
